Canada has 40% of the world’s certified forests, far more than any other country. Canada is a proud global leader in forest management.
More than 2/3 of Canada’s harvestable forests are independently certified, guaranteeing that sustainable forest management standards are upheld. Therefore, buyers of wood harvested from Canada can be confident that it was harvested in a sustainable, environmentally responsible way.

Forest certification is a voluntary tool available to forestry organizations who want to demonstrate corporate responsibility by having their forest management planning and practices independently certified against a sustainable forest management standard that goes beyond regulatory requirements and takes environmental, economic and social values into consideration.In Canada, there are three certification standards in use, all of which are globally recognized:
- Canadian Standards Association (CAN CSA/Z809)
- Sustainable Forestry Initiative Program (SFI)
- Forest Stewardship Council of Canada (FSC)

Facts About Certified Forests
Only 10% of the world’s forests are certified to credible third-party certification programs. That is to say that 90% of the world’s forests are not certified, and therefore do not give the assurance that they are harvested under the rigourous scrutiny of third party organizations.Canada has 40% of the world’s certified forests, far more than any other country.
